Why is Women’s Football So Gay? Mundial’s Short Film Unpacks the Question We Know You’re All Asking
If you haven’t seen it yet, Mundial’s 12-minute short film “Why is Women’s Football so Gay?” is a real treat. Hosted by Rosie Hewitson and Suky Stroud, and packed with the wit and warmth of grassroots football, the film dives into a vibrant subculture where women’s football and sapphic love entwine.
There’s plenty to love: candid chats with queer trailblazers like Joanie Evans of Hackney Women’s FC (Europe’s original gay football team, founded in 1986), gossipy intel from Studs founder Becky Taylor-Gill, and fan moments captured at the London Dyke March. Expect amusing takes on cultural moments, THE couple chart, and snappy breakdowns of those “if you know, you know” moments unique to the women’s game.

But it’s not just inside jokes or pitch-side banter. The film highlights how women’s football has long been a safe, supportive haven for LGBTQ+ folk, a space where joy and acceptance are the norm. As Suky Stroud puts it: “Queer women, trans and non-binary people have always been part of football—whether banned or not—and we plan to be for the next hundred years.”
